Admissions

Southampton Hospital School is an Alternative Provision. This means that our admission process is different to your child’s usual school. There are also two distinct parts of our school: the hospital school, and medical outreach. For more information about medical outreach, please also visit the dedicated page

All children are referred to the Hospital School by a medical practitioner. This process may be slightly different depending on where your child is admitted within the hospital.

Southampton Children’s Hospital

When your child is admitted to Southampton Children’s Hospital, they will be referred to SHS by their medical team, once they have determined your child is well enough to attend school. Alternatively, you can request your child be referred by speaking to your child’s medical team or by contacting the school office.

Our teaching team will meet with you to complete our simple admission paperwork, which you can view here

This meeting is also an opportunity to discuss your child’s current educational provision and any additional needs they may have.

Once a referral is received, and consent signed by parents/carers, we will then contact your child’s usual school to liaise and plan your child’s educational provision whilst in hospital. Through the admission form, we will obtain your consent to liaise with your child’s medical team so that we can ensure your child is safe whilst being educated in hospital.

Bursledon House

Before your child’s admission to Bursledon House is confirmed, you will be invited to a visit or a pre-admission meeting. This will give you an opportunity to meet with the school team, visit the classrooms and ask any questions you might have. We will also ask for consent to contact your child’s school when the date of admission is confirmed, to enable us to request information about your child’s academic, social and emotional needs. This information will be used to create a highly tailored educational package for your child.

If an admission date is offered to you at short notice, we will contact your child’s school on the first day of admission.

On admission, you will be asked to complete our simple admission paperwork, which you can view here.
