What We Do

For Children in Hospital

When your child is admitted to Southampton Children’s Hospital, they will be referred to SHS by their medical team, once the medical team have determined your child is well enough to attend school. Alternatively, you can request your child be referred by speaking to your child’s medical team.

School staff will meet with you upon referral to discuss your child’s current educational provision and any additional needs they may have. We will also contact your child’s usual school to liaise and plan your child’s educational provision. We will also obtain your consent to liaise with your child’s medical team so that we can ensure your child is safe whilst being educated in hospital.

Your child will then be placed on roll at SHS and can immediately start attending the classrooms on Piam Brown or G3 or be taught at their bedside if they are not well enough to attend the classroom.

Bursledon House

Southampton Hospital School also provides full time education for pupils staying at Bursledon House. The unit is served by two classrooms, a primary and a secondary.

Outreach

Alongside our hospital education provision, Southampton Hospital School also provides outreach teaching for Southampton pupils who are unable to attend their usual school due to medical needs. This provision is managed by the LA Inclusion team, and pupils are referred by their usual schools.
