Preparing for School

Any stay in hospital can be disorientating and difficult, but it doesn’t have to have a negative impact on your child’s education. In fact, many pupils find the small class sizes and opportunities for 1:1 teaching at Southampton Hospital School helps them to make rapid progress in areas that they have previously found difficult.

Your child does not need to bring in work from their usual school.

We have our own curriculum that is fully in line with the National Curriculum and adapted for each student as needed. Therefore, there is no requirement for them to bring work from their normal school. The exception to this might be if your child is in Year 10 or 11 and they would like to bring work directly related to their current courses and areas of study. We will support your child in completing this work.

Bursledon House

If your child is staying in Bursledon House, we ask you bring:

  • Your child’s normal school uniform
  • Your child’s normal P.E. kit
  • Your child’s reading books
  • Your child’s EHCP (if relevant)
  • Any useful school reports or information
  • Any passwords for online learning platforms

If your child is in year 10 or 11 (KS4), we also ask you to bring:

  • Details of G.C.S.E courses and syllabi
  • Any revision materials being used

Southampton Children’s Hospital

We understand that for many of our pupils, arrival in hospital was unplanned or unexpected. Therefore, our teaching team will fully understand if you are not able to provide some of the items below.

Where possible, we ask parents/carers to provide:

  • Information about your child’s specific SEND needs, if relevant, such as providing SHS staff with a copy of your child’s EHCP.
  • Details of GCSE courses and syllabi, for pupils in years 10 & 11.
  • Passwords to online learning platforms and access to a laptop if at all possible.
