Be Involved

We fully believe that the best education occurs when teachers and parents are working together to support children’s learning.

School staff are available to meet with you regularly to discuss your child’s progress and wellbeing. Appointments can be made directly through the school office.

Bursledon House

One of the school team will attend your initial meeting and your discharge meeting. During the admission, we will open our classrooms every Wednesday from 3.30pm-4pm to enable you to speak to the teachers and view your child’s work. We will also write a full school report at the end of their stay and share this with school and parents. You are invited to contact the school office at any time if you have any questions, queries or worries.

Whilst at Bursledon House, your child will attend one of our secondary or primary classrooms alongside their peers in the unit. Class numbers are small, often between 3 and 6, with a teacher and teaching assistant in each classroom. They will be dual registered during their time with us, meaning their attendance at their usual school will not be negatively affected. The weekly timetable will consist of core subjects, English, maths and science, alongside foundation subjects including art, history, geography, PSHE and PE. We also offer regular opportunities for extra curricula activities such as music club; online STEM and career sessions; trips to the local city farm, wildlife park, art galleries and theatres.

Our bespoke approach to curriculum design and delivery ensures that all children make substantial and meaningful gains in their knowledge and skills whilst they are attending our school. At the heart of our curriculum lies high academic standards, a desire to create intellectual curiosity and a commitment to setting young people on the path to a full and productive life.

Southampton Children’s Hospital

Your child will then be placed on roll at SHS and can immediately start attending the classrooms on Piam Brown or G3, or be taught at their bedside if they are not well enough to attend the classroom.

A bespoke timetable will be created for your child that works around their medical needs, levels of fatigue and treatment plans. Our bespoke approach to curriculum design and delivery ensures that children make substantial and meaningful gains in their knowledge and skills whilst they are attending our school. At the heart of our curriculum lies high academic standards, a desire to create intellectual curiosity and a commitment to setting young people on the path to a full and productive life.

Our highly experienced teachers and support staff know that any stay in hospital, or prolonged spell of absence from school, is highly unsettling and disruptive for young people and their families. All of our interactions with young people are therefore compassionate, empathetic and essentially caring in nature. We work in close partnership with hospital health professionals, partner schools, community mental health services and inclusion services to ensure that the emotional needs of all of our young people are fully understood and met.
