Photography Trip

By Lastest News & Events

Last week, on Friday 27th September, myself and three other pupils from Southampton Hospital School were lucky enough to be invited to The Gregg School to participate in a lesson about birds of prey. The birds we viewed were extraordinary species. Their talons were honed and razor sharp, perfect for eradicating their prey.

The Eagle Owl [right] can be found on the North Yorkshire Moors. There are currently 60 breeding pairs. They have the grip strength of a grizzly bear, taking anything up to the size of a goat. Sadly, this owl isn’t very intelligent, contrary to popular belief that owls are “wise” birds. Their eyesight is nothing short of spectacular and they can spot their prey from afar.  Their eye colour is orange, which indicates that they hunt their prey at dawn/dusk.

Yet another amazing species of bird, the American kestrel [left] can adapt to any climate and environment. It packs a predator’s fierce intensity into its small body. The American kestrel is the smallest and most common falcon in North America but is endangered.

The Little Owl [right] was introduced to the UK in the 19th century. It can be seen in the day, usually perching on a tree branch, telegraph pole or rock. It favours lowland habitats such as farmland, parkland and orchards. It only grows to about 20 cm tall.

I 100% enjoyed the session and was very impressed by the amazing feats of the birds of prey. I learned lots and would definitely recommend it to other people if they get the chance. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

A Royal Adventure

By Lastest News & Events

This week, pupils from the hospital school enjoyed an educational adventure at Royal Victoria Country Park. They spent the day exploring the great outdoors in glorious sunshine and learning all about the historic Royal Victoria Military Hospital.

The pupils were allowed inside the Royal Victoria Chapel where they were taught all about its engaging history by the Royal Victoria Country Park staff. This linked in with our recent work on the topic and was a great opportunity to celebrate the pupil’s hard work.

Of course, no trip to Royal Victoria Country Park would be complete without some time on the beach, and after enjoying the views from Weston shore we even found time to explore the onsite park and ice cream stand!

Lights, Camera, Action!

By Lastest News & Events

Thank you to all pupils, parents and staff who have worked incredibly hard to show off our school as we hosted a videographer and photographer this week. We are very proud of how our pupils represented our school and shared about their time in hospital. We know that it can be very daunting to stand in-front of the camera – for staff and pupils! However, we think the resilience of our pupils, and their willingness to help tell other children in hospital about our school, deserves special recognition.

Thank you again to all our pupils, parents and staff, who helped to make the days a roaring success!

Down on the farm

By Lastest News & Events

Pupils from Busledon House, the hospital wards and our outreach provision all enjoyed a trip to Southampton City Farm this week. Situated a short journey from our school, the Southampton City Farm is home to a collection of indoor and outdoor animals. Favourites included the cheeky goats and noisy chickens. As well as learning about how the animals are cared for, pupils were also given the opportunity to handle many animals, from the soft and furry to the scaly and slithery!

It was a fantastic day out and pupils especially enjoyed that they could touch and play with the animals while learning about their natural habitats.

A big thank you to the staff at Southampton City Farm for hosting our trip, we look forward to visiting again in the near future.
